Fall Issue – November 2016

 Chris Mulcahy 1 BW

President’s Message

As 2016 draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on all of the changes that have occurred in our industry and in our world. More than ever, MNYCA firmly holds its place as a reliable and constant resource during rapidly changing times. Our association is an oasis for members to share ideas, expand their network and make memories with welcoming friends.

This fall, 68 members and guests met up at Yankee Stadium’s Budweiser Hall of Fame lounge to cheer New York on as they took the Red Sox 5 to 1. In early November about the same number of people attended our Fall Technical Forum. Four industry experts, including NJ Assemblyman, Gordon M. Johnson, discussed the current regulations impacting our industry. As it is an election year, members couldn’t help from asking Mr. Johnson some very poignant questions about New Jersey politics. Needless to say, it was an informative evening on many levels.

We are gearing up for our Holiday Party at Iberia Tavern & Restaurant’s Crystal Room on December 1. We had over 175 attendees in 2015 and it looks like we will beat that number this year. We hope that you and your colleagues will join us for this very special evening. We will also be honoring five colleagues with the 2016 Paint Pioneer Award for their years of dedication to the coatings industry.

2017 is just around the corner and we have some really wonderful events planned. This spring we will be launching our first-ever educational outreach program. The initiative seeks to provide mentorship, information and paid internships to young people who have an interest in the coatings industry. It will be a great way to share your experience and expertise. Stay tuned for further information sometime in early 2017.

On behalf of the entire MNYCA Board, please know how grateful we are for your continued support. Wishing you all a healthy and happy holiday season.

Chris Mulcahy

MNYCA President

Night at Yankee Stadium – Yankees take the Red Sox!

On September 29, MNYCA held it’s annual Night at Yankee Stadium. This event tends to sell out pretty quickly and this year the Budweiser Hall of Fame Lounge was at max capacity yet again.

Members and guests arrived early for a pre-game ceremony honoring Red Sox slugger, David Ortiz. He was about to retired from baseball and was playing his final game at Yankee Stadium. Ortiz was quoted as saying that he is always going to respect Yankee fans- “Yankee fans, believe it or not, are the only fans that come to me straight up and tell me, ‘Hey, I’m a Yankee fan, but I respect you.”

It was a great evening of food; drink, camaraderie and a 5 to 1 Yankee win over the Boston Red Sox!

Fall Technical Forum Makes for Lively Discussion

On November 3 the MNYCA held its Fall Technical Forum at Redd’s Restaurant in Carlstadt, NJ. Over 65 members and guests turned out to get current on the political, economic and regulatory conditions that are currently impacting the coatings industry.

Board member, Rick Mazzariello of Enrichem Specialties spearheaded this hot topic and brought together an expert line up of speakers that included Assemblyman, Gordon M. Johnson. Mr. Johnson is the Chairman of the Commerce and Economic Development Committee of New Jersey and has served the 37th Legislative District of Bergen County General Assembly since 2001. Along with Johnson, speakers included: Edward T. Waters, the Director of Government Affairs for the Chemistry Council of NJ, David Darling, P.E., the Managing Director of Health, Safety and Environment for the American Coatings Association and Joseph P. Paranac, Jr., Attorney at Law for LeClairRyan.

Each presenter addressed the topic from their unique area of expertise- giving attendees broad insight into all of the issues at hand. Edward T. Waters of the NJ Chemistry Council focused on the legislative side, sharing updates on issues pertaining to lead, paint care and Assembly Bill 1373 which prohibits “the use, sale, offer for sale or promotional purposes, or distribution of any neonicotinoid pesticide”.  David Darling, P.E. of the American Coatings Association focused on AIM VOC regulations and Small Container Exemptions that took effect in 2016, he also addressed SCEs slated to take effect in 2019 and 2020. Joseph P. Paranac, Jr. of the law firm LeClairRyan shared his knowledge of the recent OSHA rules and regulations put into place that will affect employers in the near future. These regulations include: rising penalty amounts, new and more extensive HazCom requirements and proposed new Beryllium standards.

During the Q&A period, conversation segued quite energetically into politics- as Election Day was right around the corner. Members, guests and panelists engaged in a spirited and vocal debate. MNYCA members always create an environment that is inclusive: one that gives ample room for everyone to have a voice. There was a lot of opinion expressed and also a lot of laughter! Special thanks go out to Rick Mazzariello of Enrichem Specialties and Chris Mulcahy (MNYCA President) of Advanced Polymers for pulling together this fantastic event.

Emulsion Polymers in Paint & Coatings to Grow 5.4% Annually Through 2020

World demand for emulsion polymers in paint and coatings (excluding paper coatings) is forecast to expand a healthy 5.4 percent per year to 5.0 million metric tons in 2020, the fastest growth of any major emulsion market.  A continuing shift toward the use of waterborne latex paints — a trend that is occurring in virtually all parts of the world — is projected to fuel market gains.  Advances are expected to be most pronounced in developing countries, as these markets have the most potential for replacement of solvent-based coatings as well as for more rapid growth in coatings production overall. Read More:
