A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

John Messina, MNYCA President

MNYCA members,

The year seems to be flying by as autumn is already upon us. My first three months as MNYCA president has also gone by quickly. In this time, I have enjoyed working with other Board members to achieve our core goals while also looking for ways to build and grow as an association. It has also been a pleasure connecting with all the great people who help to make the MNYCA a success…our members!

Over the summer, we held two great events. Our annual golf outing at Neshanic Valley Golf Course and our family friendly day of baseball at TD Bank Ballpark. Both events afforded attendees a chance to unwind and have some fun and socialize with fellow members.

Looking ahead, I am excited that we will be returning to live forums with our first slated for Thursday, October 17th. This is a valuable opportunity for members and non-members to gain knowledge from industry experts and share their insights and experiences. On November 21st, we will have our annual holiday party at the Liberty House in Jersey City. This beautiful venue with views of NYC will surely make for a lovely evening. I hope to see you at both events.

I’m looking forward to continuing in my role as president and working together to ensure that the MNYCA remains a beneficial association for all. I encourage everyone to be active members and participate in our events as this is vital in keeping the association healthy. Thank you again for your continued support.

Kind regards,

John Messina, President MNYCA

beyond pfas: exploring new chemistries and alternatives for formula optimization

Don’t miss the upcoming event on Thursday, October 17th at 3 PM!

The presentation will explore the use of fluoropolymer and micro-powder additives, particularly PTFE micro-powder, in various applications. Due to concerns about PFAS content, the presentations will focus on current regulations and the search for non-PFAS alternatives like basic waxes and alloy waxes. Furthermore, the use of PFAS in paints and coatings will be explored, highlighting the need for replacement strategies. Emphasized will be the importance of managing expectations and considering different chemistries and test methods to achieve desired performance properties.

FAMILY DAY AT THE BALLPARK

TD BANK BALLPARK, BRIDGEWATER, NJ

On July 24th, the MNYCA held an afternoon of baseball at TD Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ. Many MNYCA members brought their families interns, and guests to cheer on the teams and socialized. It was a beautiful sunny day that was enjoyed by all.

The home team, the Somerset Patriots, secured the win in extra innings, 12 innings to be exact. We had a visit in our private area from Sparky, the team’s mascot. All attendees went home with a MNYCA goody bag.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

U.S. Silica Holdings, Inc. is a leading supplier of high-quality silica products, playing a crucial role in the paints and coatings industry. With over a century of experience, the company blends innovation and quality to deliver essential materials that enhance product performance, durability, and aesthetics.

In the late 1800s, pioneer Henry Harrison Hunter mined and processed his first sand sample by hand near Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Hunter entered this sand sample in the Chicago World's Fair. He won a blue ribbon and the medal of excellence for the sand's purity. A small plant was built to mine the deposit to produce silica sand for glass manufacturing.

The company as it exists today has undergone many developments over the years, including the merging of the Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation and Ottawa Silica Company to form what is now known as U.S. Silica Company. Today, they have more than 27 production facilities across the country. They upgrade their plants and equipment regularly, and invest in their employees to ensure that their knowledge base remains state-of-the-art.

In April 2024, U.S. Silica entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Apollo Funds for $1.85 Billion.

US Silica’s key product offerings for the paint and coatings market include Min-U-Sil® ground silica, which is used as a filler to improve texture, bulk, and coverage in various paint formulations and our Celatom® diatomaceous earth and perlite products that offer exceptional performance as matting agents and fillers, enhancing texture and providing ideal finish in paints.

U.S. Silica’s newest product, Everwhite® Pigment, is a highly refined silica-based mineral that increases the opacity and whiteness of paints, resulting in better color retention and a more vibrant finish. It serves as a novel alternative for other inorganic white pigments, such as titanium dioxide.

As a global industrial mineral supplier, U.S. Silica is committed to partnering with customers to help them achieve their goals while offering tailored logistics solutions. With a strong R&D focus, U.S. Silica continually develops advanced silica solutions specifically for the paints and coatings market. By collaborating with industry partners, we strive to address evolving customer needs and trends, including eco-friendly formulations.

As demand for innovative and sustainable paints and coatings continues to grow, U.S. Silica is well-positioned to lead the industry. The company's dedication to quality, sustainability, and innovation ensures it remains a trusted partner, ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Alicia Colacci, MNYCA President

‘WITH A RICH HISTORY AND A BRIGHT FUTURE’

MNYCA members,

We have reached the end of the executive board’s current term. While the year seemed to fly by, I believe we made progress setting goals for future association initiatives. This year we have been hard at work trying to ensure a bright future for the organization and we are off to a good start.

The website has been revamped and updated frequently along with more consistent use of LinkedIn to share communications with the paints and coatings community overall. Plans are underway to return to live technical forums, among other events and ways to network with our members.

The annual meeting was held at The Highlawn, West Orange, NJ on May 15th where the new board slate for 2024-2025 was presented to the members. I am happy to say that it consists of longstanding members as well as new members, who can share some new insights. I have no doubt that under the leadership of our incoming president, John Messina, this organization will continue to thrive. He brings a refreshing perspective that will surely guide us to even greater heights.

Already scheduled for 2024 is the golf outing at Neshanic Valley on June 18th and a family day of Patriots Baseball on July 24th, along with a beautiful new venue for the Holiday Party, at the Liberty House in Jersey City on November 21st, 2024.

I want to express my sincere appreciation to our board members, whose tireless efforts provided invaluable guidance and support. A special thank you goes out to our dedicated members who actively participated in events, volunteered their time, and shared their ideas. It has been an honor to serve as President and I look forward to remaining involved and supporting the MNYCA as Chairman.

The association thrives on your active participation. Let us continue this momentum and make an even greater impact!

Warm regards,

Alicia Colacci, President MNYCA

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Paint Over Rust Products, LLC (P.O.R. Products) 100 Years Strong

P.O.R. Products is a leader in rust preventive and metal specialty coatings. It was founded in 1923 by Mort Rosenthal and Jim Ledwith, using the descriptive name Woodfinishing Products Inc. It was based in Hunts Point, a section of the Bronx, NY, and quickly moved to a larger facility in the East Bronx. The primary product was shellac, sold under the Absolute brand name, used for priming walls and finishing hardwood floors. Most of the products were sold directly to paint and hardware stores in the metro New York area. Through the 1920s and 1930s the company focused on catering to a large market for shellac that existed before the introduction of alkyd paints. In the 1930s, Woodfinishing Products expanded their reach by hiring reps in other states and grew sales across the United States, despite the challenges of the depression and limited growth. During the 1940s the company was classified as an essential industry during WWII. Shellac was used by the government in large quantities as a waterproofing agent on canvas field tents and as an indicator on munitions.

After the war and into the late 50s the market for shellac was slowing. Alkyd wall primers were growing and showed improved performance in many areas and hurt shellac sales. Woodfinishing Products aggressively moved into a twostep distribution model and working with buying groups. This tactic worked well and showed another avenue of growth for the company and set the path for its selling strategy for years to come. They also entered the private label market through relationships with The Sherwin Williams Co. and Sears Roebuck.

By the mid 1960s, Woodfinishing Products was one of the first companies to market polyurethane varnish as a new and very effective way to protect wood floors. The success of Last-n-Last became widely brand recognized across the United States. Eventually the company discontinued shellac and focused on polyurethane based chemistry. The company name changed to Absolute Coatings to better express the direction of the company and product portfolio.

In the 1990s, the company moved to a larger facility in New Rochelle, NY, with 50,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing and office space on two acres of land. At that time Absolute Coatings became the toll producer of POR-15, a specialty paint designed to protect rusted metal surfaces, marketed to automotive customers as a restoration and corrosion prevention coating. POR-15 has grown to become a leader in the restoration market.

In 2016, the wood flooring side of the business was sold, along with the Absolute Coatings brand name. The company was renamed Paint Over Rust Products, LLC (P.O.R. Products) to reflect its focus on specialty metal coatings for heavy industrial equipment, agricultural machines, and automotive restorations around the world. The company continues to adapt to changing markets by increasing its sales reach to Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East, and recently has launched its Auto Refinish division American Icon Finishes brand, focusing on clear coats and primers for the automotive refinish market.

In 2021 after 98 years of family ownership, the company was sold to H.I.G. Capital and became a subsidiary of Recochem out of Montreal Canada.

In 2023, the company celebrated its 100th year as a coating manufacturer in the metro New York area. It remains proud to continue the traditions laid out by its founders and provide world-class products for its customers.

We hope to set the stage to shape an era focused on analyzing “what we do” and “how we can better serve” you the members. Let us embrace these transformations, charting a brighter future for the MNYCA and its current and future members.

The start of the year brings the annual launch of our Scholarship program. The MNYCA is now accepting applications for consideration in the selection of the 2024 Michael A. SpecialChem connects specialty chemicals and materials suppliers with technical buyers, supporting innovation within the Chemical industry and accelerating business growth. SpecialChem’s mission is to provide a complete material selection experience facilitating the exchange of technical product information and fostering collaboration. SpecialChem was founded in 2000 by Bernard Hasson and Christophe Cabarry in Paris, France. Coming from the Chemical Industry, they saw the need for easy access to Technical Information.

From their vision, SpecialChem has become “the go-to resource” for industry professionals seeking to discover and engage with a wide array of materials and ingredients. The largest specialty chemicals product information “Selector” covers over 350,000 products from 6,000 suppliers. A thriving community of 500,000+ members represent over 175,000 companies.

About 70% of the members are in technical roles. The website supports 9 million visits per year, representing approx. 6 million projects.

In the “analog” past, sellers typically initiated the first contact with the buyers; the “digital” world today has buyers initiating the first contact with suppliers. Most formulators prefer “self- education” and make a pre-selection of raw materials after their own online search. It has become essential for suppliers to be “digitally discoverable” on many channels.

On five platforms focused on Coatings and Inks, Cosmetics and Personal Care, Adhesives and Sealants, Polymer Additives and Polymers and Elastomers, specialty chemicals are searchable and digitally discoverable and generate leads for the suppliers who are SpecialChem clients.

SpecialChem designs tailor-made digital B2B marketing strategies, provides uniquely targeted market research and digitalization expertise to Specialty Chemical companies.

The company’s expertise in “Marketing - Digital – Chemicals” is exemplified by its latest offering, ionicPIM, the first Product Information Management System designed specifically for the Chemical Industry to centralize complex chemical information, simplify data management and enable easy creation of online catalogues for chemical manufacturers and distributors.

In addition to this service, MNYCA is working to make our industry more visible to local colleges and universities and encouraging new graduates to consider the Coatings industry as a career.

If your company would like to be more involved, please contact Bob Whiteley at rwhiteley@jns-smithchem.com.
