A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Dave White, MNYCA President

MNYCA members,

It seems like just yesterday I wrote my last President’s message. Supply chain seems to be loosening up and prices have somewhat stabilized. The talk of recession is not going away anytime soon. Yet, the Coatings Industry stays resilient.

It is time again for the Eastern Coatings Show. May 16th – 18th. On Tuesday May 16th you can choose between golf and the Short Course. The University of Southern Mississippi offer the short course. The first 2 hours are devoted to topics for the new Chemist followed by 2 hours of a more advanced lecture for seasoned Chemists. So, whether new or a grizzled vet this course is for you.

After the day’s festivities enjoy the opening reception poolside at Harrah’s. Wednesday will start with a keynote by Dan Calkins, Chairman & CEO of Benjamin Moore. There will be 42 technical presentations spread over two days as well as 120+ booths on the show floor. One of the many highlights will be the Panel Discussion. The topic will be ‘Where do we go from here- The future of coatings”. Panelists include industry experts as well as academia.

The Board of the MNYCA has done an excellent job of putting together the schedule for the rest of the year. Starting with our annual meeting, being held June 6th at Macaluso’s. We will be having a Cocktail Party and approving the slate for the 2023-2024 Board and Officers.

On June 20th we will hold our annual golf outing at Neshanic Valley Golf Course. Always a much looked forward to event. Come hit the links and enjoy fun and merriment.

Due to schedule conflicts, we are unable to offer a Yankee game this summer. Instead, we will be heading out to the Somerset Patriots vs. Bowie Baysox (Affiliate of Baltimore Orioles) for an afternoon of baseball. For those of you that haven’t been to a Minor League baseball game it is an excellent venue to entertain a customer, bring family and have a great time. It is a relaxing day at the ballpark. Bring the kids as Minor League ballparks cater to the youth.

Won’t you join us for a great time eating hot dogs, cotton candy and all the other things we should not be partaking in.

The largest regional coatings show in America. Eastern Coating Show May 16 – 18, 2023, at Harrah’s Resort, Atlantic City, NJ.

Dan Calkins, Chairman and CEO of Benjamin Moore, will be the opening keynote speaker at Eastern Coatings Show 2023. “Leading a Business Through Challenging Times,” Calkins will share his experiences in managing a business through the tumultuous times of recent years and the impact such circumstances have on both the business and the people working in it every day. Calkins will share insight into how Benjamin Moore navigated unforeseen challenges and planned toward a “new normal” across business units, ultimately creating a more agile, resilient organization poised for the future. Superior Materials, a 4th generation privately held company, will celebrate its 77th anniversary as a specialty chemicals distributor in 2023. Incorporated in 1946, Superior evolved from the paint consulting laboratory founded by Benjamin Joachim in 1923 and has offered stability and consistency to its principals and its customers for its entire history.

During the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, the first two family generations guided Superior’s growth as a technically oriented raw materials supplier to paint, plastic, and ink manufacturers in the New York region. Superior’s current-day product portfolio still includes the very first product lines the company ever sold, a unique testament to Superior’s commitment to its customers and principals.

Today, Superior Materials, a long-term NACD member company, covers 26 states in the Eastern half of the United States, representing 17 principals and shipping from 4 warehouses. Superior sells to the CASE, Construction, Plastics, HI&I, Food, Pharma, Personal Care, and related markets.

With an ever-growing commitment to sustainability, Superior Materials is proud to be a part of EcoVadis with a current bronze status. The company is dedicated to doing its part toward providing a better and more sustainable future for the next generation.

Superior Materials has increased its philanthropic efforts since the inception of the COVID-19 pandemic by supporting and providing meals for the hard-working Nurses and Doctors of the Montefiore Children’s Hospital in the Bronx, NY. Superior Materials will continue to provide time and financial support to the first responder community.

Superior continues to grow organically and has recently added 2 customer service representatives to the team in addition to the new role of Director of Operations who will work towards the continued growth and independence of the organization. In an age of digital marketing, venture capital and global mergers, the uniqueness of an organization that is committed to approaching its markets with the same dedication and intimacy as prior generations is quite extraordinary.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Koppers Company / Kop-Coat, Inc. MRT/ Modern Recreational Technologies

Koppers Company was started in 1907 by Heinrich Koppers, a German Engineer, as a coke production company. Coking is the refining of coal which removes many of the impurities such as coal tar and other volatile materials like water. This coke is utilized as a fuel in the smelting of iron ore and the production of steel. The coal tar by-products of this coke production were the original coatings manufactured by Koppers Company.

In the 1940’s and 1950’s Kop-Coat expanded its chemical reach to rubber and plastic chemicals. This continued through the 1960’s and 1970’s. In 1964 Koppers Company purchased the Inertol Company of Newark, NJ. Inertol, which was started in 1921, was a manufacturer of industrial paints and coatings including asphalt and coal tar coatings as well as coatings for swimming pools and water tanks. These coatings continued to be produced out of the Inertol facility as well as several other Koppers Company facilities.

In 1972 Koppers Company purchased the Andrew Brown Company of Los Angeles, CA, which dated back to 1923. Andrew Brown Company had, at one point, six production facilities throughout the US. Since they were heavily invested in the Military and Federal Specification business, they sited many of these facilities near aircraft manufacturing sites for quicker delivery. Andrew Brown was also a manufacturer of paints and coatings for the marine industry. These were branded as Z-Spar products and included a full line of anti-fouling paints, varnishes, primers, and topside paints. Koppers Company shuttered three of the six facilities and moved substantial production to the Newark, NJ facility.

In 1985 Koppers purchased Woolsey Marine Paint of Brooklyn, NY and moved production into the Newark, NJ plant. Woolsey had been around since 1853 and had been under the same roof as Sapolin Paints in Brooklyn. Woolsey’s original plant was sited in Jersey City, NJ. They manufactured Mil Spec. and Federal Specification coatings as well as paints for the marine industry.

In 1986 Koppers Company purchased the Pettit Paint Company of Rockaway, NJ. Pettit Paint was a producer of marine coatings. At this point, Koppers Company was producing marine and industrial coatings at the three remaining Koppers Company facilities in Los Angeles, CA, Irving, TX and Newark, NJ as well as at the Pettit facility in Rockaway.

In 1988, a controlling stake in Koppers was acquired by Beazer, a British Conglomerate. At this time there were a number of management buy outs in the chemical and allied products divisions of Koppers Company. One of these was to the management team that purchased the coatings group of Koppers, consisting of the four facilities mentioned above as well as a coal tar facility in Garwood, NJ, and the Wolman wood treatment chemicals plant in St. Louis, MO. This then became known as Kop-Coat, Inc.

Kop-Coat was sold in 1989 to RPM. Soon thereafter, the Newark facility was closed, later to be a production site for other RPM Companies, Zinsser and Rustoleum.

For a time in the 1990’s Day Glo colors was a part of Kop-Coat, Inc, but now is an independent under the RPM banner.

The Pettit line of products is sold through both one and two step distribution. The largest distributor being West Marine who handles a full line of Pettit products in addition to the private label items that Kop-Coat produces for them.

The story doesn’t end there as Kop-Coat, Inc. is transitioning to a new name: MRT Products. MRT, Modern Recreational Technologies consists of the Pettit Marine Paint line, the Ramuc Pool Paint line, Tuffcoat products and Valvtect Fuel Additives. Company headquarters are now located in Hickory, NC with the paint products in the Pettit line, Ramuc line and Tuffcoat line being produced at the Newark, NJ facility.

US Trade and Supply Chain

Pickard presented on the state of affairs of supply chains under both the current administration and past administration. Pickard is an attorney with more than 20 years of experience representing clients in international trade and national security-related matters. A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Dave White, MNYCA President

I am humbled and honored to serve as the MNYCA President for the 2022 - 2023 term. Many of us expected the supply chain issues to be a thing of the past by now. They appear to be sticking around but our industry is resilient and will get through this. When I look back at my President’s message from 2012, I see that the economy was not doing well then.

I look forward to working with an awesome Board of Directors. Joining the Board of Directors for the 2022 - 2023 campaign are Christine Gehres - SpecialChem, Tom Kinlin- Shamrock Technologies and Frank Winkelman – Pettit Paint. Continuing to serve the MNYCA as Board members are Dr. Frank Cangelosi, Thomas Penny, Michele Claeson, Kim Rafferty, Thomas Daquila, Bruce Schimmel, Howard Goldstein, Robert Whiteley, John Kehmna, Steve Sanchez, Andy Romano and Kurt Maas.

Your Officers for 2022 - 2023 are; Chairman of the Board - Jason Anagnostis, President - Dave White, Vice President- Alicia Colacci.

I would like to thank Bruce Schimmel for stepping in for a second time as President of the MNYCA under very trying times. As I write this, there is a great amount of turmoil in the world. However, the MNYCA has been a constant for over 136 years. The annual meeting was held on Wednesday, May 18th, at Macaluso’s in Hawthorne, NJ. Attendance was good as everyone was happy to be able to meet in person. This outdoor event was held on the new veranda. Everyone had a great time as food and drink flowed. We will be holding our Holiday Party at the same venue on December 1st. Of course, this will be an indoor party as it will be December.

We had our annual visit to Yankee Stadium on June 29th. As usual, the Bronx Bombers did not disappoint, unless you are a Mets fan that is. It was a wonderful event in the Audi club. The food and networking was outstanding. You should make plans to attend this event next year, as it is a great way to say thanks to your customers and network.

If you enjoy hitting that little white ball around the golf course, please join us for the MNYCA Golf Outing Tuesday, September 13th at Neshanic Station, NJ. We’ll be back at this spectacular venue. It is a great course with a fantastic caterer. Come challenge the golf gods and hydrophilic golf balls.

We will be holding our fall forum in October. It will feature Daniel Pickard discussing the supply chain. A very pertinent topic. Sustainability seems to be the VOCs of the 2020’s. Our industry has made great strides in this arena and will continue to push the envelope to develop new unique products that will enable us to meet the goals of sustainability.

What seemed like a long way off a couple of months ago, the Eastern Coatings Show is just around the corner. ECS will take place May 16 - 18, 2023 at Harrah’s Atlantic City. We are looking forward to seeing everyone down the “Jersey Shore”. It promises to be a “can’t miss” show.
