A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Alicia Colacci, MNYCA President

MNYCA members,

As the year is winding down and we look forward to 2024, I would like to reflect on the past year and take this chance to thank everyone that participated in the associations’ events. This past year was not without its challenges, but perseverance and dedication keep us moving in the right path. I anticipate continued success and growth for the MNYCA, with the help of the membership and the board’s ongoing dedication.

We are genuinely excited to host a virtual Fall Technical Forum on November 14th presented by allnex. The related topics, ‘Non-Isocyanate Coatings with Fast Return-to-Service and Excellent Appearance for Industrial Flooring Application’ and ‘High Solids and Low VOC Coatings for Flooring Application Based on Michael Addition Chemistry,’ serve a dual purpose. We understand the need for time management with our busy schedules, therefore, by continuing to host virtual technical forums it allows for that flexibility in attendance.

We are seeing early responses and anticipating a great turnout at the Holiday Party at Macaluso’s, Hawthorne, NJ on November 29th and I am looking forward to sharing a cocktail (or two) and great food with our current and new members alike. Be sure to make your reservation by November 15th. This year, we are now including an open bar for the cocktail hour from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by dinner and presentation of awards to respected fellow members for their dedication to the paint and coatings industry.

In the year ahead, we will work hard to introduce innovative topics in our technical forums and continue to provide social events traditionally enjoyed by all members such as our Annual Meeting, Golf Outing (scheduled for June 18th at Neshanic Station, NJ) and Baseball game. We hope to find more ways of engaging and attracting new members and to collaborate with other associations in the tri-state area.

Sincerely,

Alicia Colacci, President MNYCA

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

TRUST CHEM CO., LTD. was founded in 1996 by two brothers, Mr. Li Zhi and Mr. Li Wu, experts in the field of organic pigments. In the company's early days, they identified a lack of application knowledge in the organic pigment industry in China. To address this issue, in 1997, Mr. Li Zhi and Mr. Li Wu made a significant financial investment and established a state-of-the-art laboratory. Since then, Trust Chem has been committed to providing comprehensive solutions for organic pigments and dyes by integrating production, study, and research.

Today, Trust Chem is China's largest organic pigment manufacturer and exporter to the global market. Headquartered in China, Trust Chem has subsidiaries in the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, Australia, India, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, as well as an office in South Africa. With a well-established global sales network and a dedication to delivering superior service, Trust Chem has expanded its footprint to encompass more than 70 countries and regions worldwide.

Trust Chem has multiple production facilities in China, covering a full range of classical pigments and high-performance pigments. Mr. Li Zhi and Mr. Li Wu recently made the decision to expand our capabilities and added a new state-of-the-art organic pigment and dye manufacturing facility, boasting an annual capacity of 10,000 tons, which commenced operations earlier this year. They plan to continue to expand Trust Chem’s manufacturing and the next project is already under construction – the world's largest Carbazole violet plant.

Trust Chem offers a wide variety of color indexes and serves the Coatings, Inks, and Plastics markets globally. For Coatings, we provide color indexes across all categories, including OEM for the highest-grade applications. For Inks, we offer pigments for Paste Ink, Water-based Ink, Solvent-based Ink, and Special Ink industries. For Plastics, we supply pigments for a wide range of Masterbatch applications, including fiber industries.

Trust Chem operates the largest organic pigment laboratories in China, housing a dedicated team of over sixty full-time technicians responsible for QC, R&D, and analysis. Their professional EHS team is well-versed in the laws and regulations of various countries. Their commitment extends to achieving full registration . . . of our manufactured pigments for REACH compliance, with successful full registration for 89 substances already in place.

Trust Chem has experienced great success and growth over the last 27 years. From the beginning, Mr. Li Zhi and Mr. Li Wu have made reinvesting in the company their priority; this has enabled us to continue to expand and offer the highest quality technical support and products to our customers.

Fall Technical Forum

Tuesday, November 14 - 11:00 a.m.

Please RSVP: patty.paletto@mnyca.org

This virtual technical forum is presented by allnex on ‘Non-Isocyanate Coatings with Fast Return-To-Service and Excellent Appearance for Industrial Flooring Application’ and ‘High Solids and Low VOC Coatings for Flooring Application Based on Michael Addition Chemistry’ with Phillip Tomes, Business Development Manager, allnex.

Phillip is an experienced coatings professional with 20 years in the industry. During his time with allnex he has been responsible for providing formulation and technical support for Michael Addition chemistries and composite materials. In addition to his time with allnex, Phillip spent 15 years with Valspar/Sherwin-Williams where he was a group leader responsible for new product development and technical service for a wide range of technologies.

Michael Addition (MA) chemistry has been explored and developed for the use in industrial flooring. This novel technology exhibits excellent chemical properties compared to traditional systems, providing the best balance between working-time, appearance, and fast return-to-service. This MA technology is comprised of a wide variety of donor and acceptor resins, giving the formulator the ability to tailor coatings to meet specific performance goals. Polyaspartic technology is often used when fast cure and hardness development is required in flooring systems. However, this contractor-applied system requires highly skilled labor due to its very short pot-life and sensitivity to adverse application conditions such as high environmental moisture and temperature.

In this study, different combinations of resins and kinetic additives were explored to outperform polyaspartics, providing the best results for industrial flooring. The MA based system produced coatings displaying outstanding chemical and physical properties, exterior durability, longer working times, excellent appearance, robustness on high humidity and temperature, low VOCs, and fast-return-to-service. Another added value of this technology over traditional systems is the offering of a Non-Isocyanate (NISO) solution to customers looking to comply with increasing regulatory restrictions. We will also present the rheology study of various formulations with time and demonstrate that lapping time and flow-leveling of coatings has direct correlation to the creep compliance of the coating.
